Side Note of the Day:
Thanks for reading the feedscott blog. I started feedscott after resigning from my position at pc club computers in mid december 2005. I did this blog partly to fill some time and to force myself to keep up to date on current events and new trends. I have changed the format a few times but have mostly posted links to other websites, blogs, tech news, and such. Why should i retype what somebody already did. I have created a habit for myself of posting cool links everyday. 52 posts, about 300 links, and over 1000 unique visitors so far.
Due to the fact I am now becoming more serious about my job hunt, I am once again going to change the format of the feedscott blog here. I am thinking about a more conventional format with a paragraph or two about a current tech tip, event, or something tech related. I have also launched feedscott.com and implemented a mamba front end on it. feedscott.com is also going to change as I try to get wordpress running on feedscott.com. The view tank blog is now live and deals with hot topics regarding pretty much anything that happens to be on my mind.
Again, thanks for visiting the feedscott blog and come back again soon.

Steve Jobs finds Bug in Apple
At Steve Jobs keynote address at the Moscone Center in San Francisco 2005. His Mac system locked and He said he found a Bug. Steve quickly recovered by switching to a backup system. Reminiscent of the Bill Gates Blue Screen of Death BSOD incident at the Windows launch party and recently at CES with a media center freeze up and another BSOD trying to configure virtual hot rods.Has Google Secretly Launched an ISP?
Tonight on 1/10/2006 as I was checking my web stats I came across a hit with GOOGLE listed as the ISP. The IP Address 64.233.172. # (GOOGLE) and the City was Mountain View with the State listed as California and Google does have offices there. I can only find rumors on the net of a Google ISP and wonder if this is just from a google internal network or a spoof. I am submitting to Digg.com for review. Here is the link to the site meter page picture on Flickr: Google Hit
After submitting to Digg for review, some of the comments included that this hit might have been a google adsense proxy server which would make sense. Also, another person stated that google is already an ISP offering WiFi service in some places. Here are some links to Google Rumored ISP Info:

Simple way to defend your XP computer
Instructions to defend your Windows XP computer on the net, by setting limited permissions to limit malicious activities on a Windows XP computer. Most people run as an administrator on their Windows XP computers by default. It is like running as a root admin on a Linux computer.
To prevent some spy ware and other malicious activities from occurring while on the internet set up a limited user account for safer surfing.
Of course, this is not a substitute for firewall, virus or spy ware protection, but just another line of defense. Follow these instructions below:
1. Click on Start > Settings> Control Panel
2. In Control Panel click on User Accounts
3. Under Pick a task click on “create new account”
4. Type in a name for the new account like “Surf Safe” click next
5. In the next window choose “limited” not administrator
6. Then click “create account”
7. Your finished
You can add a password to the new account if you need to.
I hope this helps you.
If you have questions please leave a comment.

Today was bittersweet. A CNN story I submitted to digg.com was promoted to the front page. By being on the front page, the story went out over the digg RSS feed. The reason for the bitter is that the story had to do with the death of innocent civilians that were in the wrong house at the wrong time. The reason I submitted the story was the fact that an Unmanned surveillance plane watched bomb hit wrong house. The CNN title was "U.S. says bomb hit wrong house in Iraq." I submitted the story under the category of robots which does not get a lot of attention compared to other categories inside digg. I went to bed not expecting that there would not be much interest, but in the morning come to find this story on the front page of digg. To my surprise the diggers had gotten ahold of this story and were heatedly commenting and debating it. Read diggers comments by clicking on comments. My thought on this is that diggers are not the hardened geeks and techies that most of the articles are about on digg. Tech diggers have a very caring and compassionate side that is portrayed by some of their comments. Politics aside diggers are sensitive, informed and very opinionated.Top Story of the Day:

Bill Gates Lusted After Palm
Are Bill Gates and Microsoft mellowing with age? He seems to be more device and hardware friendly than software focused as his comments and alliances suggest. At CES this is what Bill had to say about Palm:"As we move from that low penetration up to getting all of those users, there's a lot of devices to be sold, there's a lot of network capacity to be used to allow people to work in a very seamless way. Of course, we've been in doing software for mobile devices and PDAs for quite some time. In fact, many years of that, we had a very good competition between ourselves, and Palm and others. Palm always did great work, and so we lusted after some of those things that they do well, and wanted to combine them with the things that we did well ( like monopolizing), and so it's wonderful to see that coming together. "
Is Gates moving from a search, destroy, or assimilate strategy to a "all your base are already belong to us" strategy?
Run windows update now for XP and 2000 now!
From TWIT
"As we've told you in the past two editions of Security Now! there's a very serious security flaw in all versions of Windows. This hole takes advantage of poor design choice in the Windows metafile interpreter and can be exploited by a malicious web site or by email attachments.
There are hundreds of malicious sites out there right now that take advantage of this vulnerability. Microsoft pushed a fix for Windows XP and 2000 today - so run Windows update. There is no fix yet for Windows 95/98/Me but Steve has committed to writing one if it appears to be necessary.
In this episode we talk about the vulnerability and interview the creator of the first patch for it, Ilfak Guilanov. According to Steve's analysis, Microsoft is using Ilfak's technique in its own patch."

In memory of Jackson Lan - PC CLUB Founder
It is with our deepest sorrow that we inform you the death of Mr. Jackson Lan, the President of PC Club. A fine example of entrepreneurship and visionary in the computer retail industry, Jackson died of cancer in the City of Hope hospital on 12/23/05 at the age of 55.
Our most respected President has long been a determined and outstanding leader. Prior to moving to the United States in 1989, Jackson had already demonstrated his knowledge and leadership as the General Manager of US operations for VIP Computer Inc., District Sales Manager for Hewlett-Packard Taiwan Ltd., and Program Manager/Business Process Re-engineering for Nan Ya Plastic Co. Ltd.
In 1991, Jackson formed Computer Wholesale Inc. in the City of Industry, California with great vision and anticipation. Soon after the wholesale business started, Jackson quickly realized that in order for his business to succeed, he must focus on customer service and add value to the products sold to the customers. Therefore, the first PC Club retail store was opened in 1992. Under his leadership, PC Club has grown to be a nationwide enterprise with 58 stores in 12 states today. During the last 14 years, the company was repeatedly listed as the Top 500 fastest growing private company by Inc Magazine, named Top 100 Retailers and Top 10 Innovators by Computer Retail Week as well as Top 100 CE Retailers and Top 50 PC Retailers by Twice Magazine.
From 1993 to 1994, Jackson served as the President of the Southern California Chinese Computer Association (SCCCA). Proven by the success of the company, Jackson was a finalist in the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 1997. In the following year, Jackson’s achievement and leadership were further recognized by the government of Taiwan. He received the honorable Overseas Chinese Award and the Overseas Chinese Young Entrepreneur Award.
In his latter years, Jackson became a dedicated Buddhist. Combining Buddhism and his wisdom, he developed his philosophy of life - “Happiness, Love, Harmony, Cleanse, Execution” (“喜愛圓淨行”). This philosophy goes hand in hand with his famous phrase “A Better Day, Everyday”. It also became the source of power for Jackson to battle with the cancer without fear but with incredible faith. His business theories and philosophies of life not only posted a positive impact on employees’ professionalism, but also provided insight to their personal life.
Memorial services for Jackson will be held on January 7, 2006, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the Memorial Chapel of Rose Hills Memorial Park and Mortuary (www.rosehills.com). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the “Jackson Lan Foundation”, an organization dedicated to support the research of finding a cure for cancer and work together with other non-profit organizations to promote "A Better Day, Everyday.” The address is P.O. Box 92195, City of Industry, CA 91714.

The History of RSS
Here is the history of RSS according to Dave Winer
(key developer of most of the RSS formats):
- Dec. 1997 - Dave Winer developed scriptingNews
- Mar. 1999 - RSS 0.90 was developed by Netscape, which supported the scriptingNews format. This was simply XML with a RDF Header
- Jun. 1999 - scriptingNews 2.0b1 was developed by Dave Winer at UserLand. This included Netscape's RSS 0.90 features
- Jul. 1999 - RSS 0.91 was an attempt by Netscape to move towards a more standard format and included most features from scriptingNews 2.0b1 but they removed the RDF header
- Jul. 1999 - UserLand uses RSS 0.91 and gets rid of scriptingNews
- Netscape discontinues their RSS development
- Jun. 2000 - Official RSS 0.91 specification release from UserLand
- Aug. 2000 - RSS 1.0 developed by a group lead by Rael Dornfest at O'Reilly. This format uses RDF and namespaces. Because of its name it is often confused as being a new version of 0.91, but this is a completely new format with no ties to RSS 0.91
- Dec. 2000 - RSS 0.92 developed by Dave Winer at UserLand and includes optional elements
- Sep. 2002 - RSS 2.0 is designed by Dave Winer after leaving Userland
- Jul. 2003 - RSS 2.0 specification released through Harvard under a Creative Commons license
